Telling Your Story

Living with and surviving cancer is a unique journey and it’s only natural that many people will be curious and concerned about you and your medical condition.

It’s important to remember that you don’t have to tell anyone anything right away.  You need to feel comfortable about talking about your cancer before you share it with others.  Everyone’s story is different and only you will know when it’s the right time to start sharing yours.  When it’s the right time, here are a few tips to help you prepare for an open and comfortable dialogue.

Make a list of people whom you feel comfortable sharing your story with:

Think about where and how you’d like to share your story.  Don’t hold back – explain your condition to your family members and others you feel comfortable with.  Be sure to share your true feelings… your fears, concerns, questions, uncertainties, as well as any and all other issues you may have.  You may want to pick a comfortable setting where you feel free to express yourself.  Also, it’s important to remember that if at any time you feel uncomfortable, you can always end the conversation.

For many cancer patients, sharing their story with others can gave them new found strength, hope and encouragement.
